Saint Mary the Virgin, a listed San Francisco City Landmark, provides an oasis of tranquility and delight in a congested and vital San Francisco neighborhood. The church building itself and two remarkable courtyards were highly cherished by the congregation. The remaining spaces, however, including the Parish Hall, classrooms, and staff and pastoral offices were under-utilized and did not meet the congregation’s needs. Working very closely with the Church's building committee, we developed a project that moved the Parish Hall to a lighter, larger, second floor location, provided access for the disabled to most of the Church's facilities, improved seismic performance, fire control and life safety, and modernized the aging electrical and mechanical systems. This scheme effectively reconfigured approximately two-thirds of the Church's spaces without diminishing the valued historic interiors and facades. The project was successfully completed in the summer of 1998 at the budgeted cost. Turnbull Griffin Haesloop assumed the role of design architect with Frank Goring Straja as architect of record.
